Printable cross stitch graph paper

Pick a fabric count and paper size, then print. The grid is drawn at real size, so one square on paper is one stitch on your fabric, with a bold line every ten squares for counting.

In the print dialog set scale to 100% and turn off "fit to page". Check one inch of grid against a ruler on the first print.

Which count should I print?

Match the fabric you will stitch on if you want to see the finished size on paper: 14 for 14-count Aida, and so on. If you are designing a pattern by hand, print the 4 or 5 squares-per-inch grid instead. The squares are big enough to write a symbol or color in, and you can transfer the design to the pattern studio afterwards to get a clean chart and a DMC thread list.

Why the bold line every ten squares

Cross stitch charts are counted in blocks of ten. The bold lines let you find a position by counting blocks instead of single squares, and they line up with the grid lines many stitchers baste onto their fabric before starting. Cross stitch graph paper vs. regular graph paper

Regular graph paper is usually 4 or 5 squares per inch and often has a bold line every 5. It works for sketching, but the finished-size relationship is lost and the 5-block counting does not match how charts are written. Fabric-count graph paper shows the design at real size, so you can hold it against a frame or hoop and know whether it fits.

Is this graph paper free to print?

Yes, as many copies as you like. Nothing is downloaded or watermarked.

The squares are not exactly one inch per ten. Why?

The browser's print dialog is scaling the page. Set scale to 100% and turn off "fit to page" or "shrink to fit". Some printers also have a small unprintable margin; the grid leaves half an inch clear on each side to allow for it.

Can I get the grid as a PDF?

Choose "Save as PDF" as the printer in the print dialog. The PDF keeps the real-size measurements.
